Dubturbo Review

by Jon on October 25, 2011

Ok guys, after week or so trying and testing Dubturbo, I decided to create a complete Dubturbo review for you. I rarely see a really good review out there, most people just write the same thing over and over again. There’s only a few “first hand” expiriences. I’ll try to give my share to that.

Let me just stress something at the very begining – There’s no question about is this beat maker good or not. It is the top product in his level, and I love it. What I want to present you here is a comprehensive description of all features in Dubturbo 2.0, all ins and outs, what can you expect from it and what you will ultimately get, who would buy it and who wouldn’t, etc…

I can’t really say much about the upgrades from the old version, as I just bought it recently, 2.0 version. To be understood, I’m not new in music production, I’m making beats and music for more than 10 years. Just didn’t bothered too much with Dubturbo until recently. It’s pretty big hype around it now and you simply can’t miss it, so I decided to give it a shot.

I saw the price, it was $39.95. I was like – “Jeez..what to expect from 40 bucks music software?” As anybody would be, i guess. I’m pretty sure you all saw that Sonic Producer thing and similar stuff, right..? I mean, wtf!? (This is the independant site, I can write whatever I want) Guys, this is far beyond these toys you normally see for the price.

If you don’t know nothing about making beats, all I can say is I wish I had something like Dubturbo when I was starting. My first fully arranged track was made in – don’t laugh – Playstation 1. Lol, there was a program called Music Maker or something, You can guess the amount of quality coming out of there…

My point is, for newbies, this will be excellent starting tool. Advanced users might not see it as a game changing software, but you will still be thankfull enough to have such an easy beat making software in your artillery. Because this is what Dubturbo was originally made for. This is how it should be looked.

Thing that Dubturbo appearently outgrow its original purpose is only a good thing. Having more features makes the program only better. So as we cleared this , let’s jump into the in-depth Dubturbo 2 review a bit..

Dubturbo 2.0 at A Glance

Dubturbo SequencerThis picture on the left shows how the interface of Dub Turbo looks like when you first start the software. As you can see it’s pretty straightforward, and looks just like any other sequencer out there. There are some differences though, read on…

From right to the left. Upper right corner is master volume, pretty self descriptive. Controls the volume of your overall mix. The tempo can be changed from 1- 99999… This is an alternative if you want to play your notes at 1/16 or 1/32, but we’ll talk about it more later. Dubturbo can count bars up to 199. At 120 BPM that is 06:36 min. Enough for decent track. Unlike some beat makers, giving you the opportunity to work with one single bar only. That’s ridiculous. Don’t pay for that at any case.

Exporting files is easy. Click the button and you’re done. Major thing you should allways take care of – Do not export anything as mp3! If you are a producer you are going to work only with highest quality .wav files. Your first, original export should allways be the highest quality .wav files. I don’t think I can stress that enough.

You have 16 tracks at your disposal to work on. Each have its own volume control. From instruments you have drum editor and key editor. Pretty simple to understand. Let’s talk little about them.

Dubturbo Drum Editor

Dubturbo Drum Editor
From this picture you can see how easy it is to make beats in Dubturbo. I created a video to show you some steps in making beats, but I can’t write how good or bad the sound in Dubturbo is. I can say from my expirience how excellent it is, but you should really try and listen.

There is a huge number of sound kits on the left side, you can spend days just listening all of them. There are 10 sounds in each kit, filled with killer bass drums, snares, hats, toms, shakers, claps… Tons of samples, and they really sound amazing. You can also control the volume of each of these sounds.

Beats made in Dubturbo can easily be made in 10-15 minutes. Drum editor is so stupidly easy that any geek can make a beat there. And you’ll never noticed the difference. The final product is the same as it would be from any major software. And I say that as a sworn Reason and FL user.

Good thing to mention is keyboard trigger. You can hit your keyboard and record the sounds directly. A touch of MPC here…

Dub Turbo Key Editor

Dubturbo Key EditorI honestly don’t believe it can get easier that this. I don’t know what to write :) . On the left side there is a huge sound bank where you choose your sound, and there’s a keybord to play your notes. Nothing more, nothing less. Those of you using complicated softwares – don’t expect anything like that.

However, that does not reduce the power of Dubturbo when it comes to creating beats. That’s his main purpose at the first place, remember? Key editor is just a good addon for your beats. You can still import your own unique sounds in it, that is a big plus.

Conclusion

So at the end of the day, Dubturbo is a good piece of software. I can say that the price/performance ratio is amazing. For this price you can’t get better than Dubturbo. Bear in mind that once you buy it you will have access to all the future versions of software, which will only get better and improved, so I believe it is a good time to buy it now at reduced price.

If you’re in beat making for fun, you’ll love to play with Dubturbo. If you’re serious about making beats you gonna love it too, because what used to take hours can now take as little as 15 min. With the same result.

Hope this Dubturbo review was helpful. I can recommend Dubturbo beat maker software to anyone making beats, especially those just starting. You will fall in love with it…
